The last Bank Holiday weekend of the year is nearly here, but the fun does not have to stop there. There’s an array of fantastic events happening all year round throughout North Wales from theatre shows and adrenaline-packed activities, through to scenic walks and journeys suitable for all the family. There are a number of holiday parks in Snowdonia available for you to book a tranquil break away and relish all the attractions on offer in the area. The Welsh Highland Railway is marked as one of the top attractions in Snowdonia, and this September they have the return of a fantastic event. This will commence on 11th to 13th September 2015. The Welsh Highland Great & Small II is based at the northern end of the Welsh Highland Railway, centred around Dinas Station and Yard, plus the beautiful section between Caernarfon and Waunfawr. The event was first introduced back in 2013 and following the successful outcome they are welcoming a large number of narrow gauge model railway layouts to Dinas goods shed. The main line will follow on with the model railway ethos and run an intensive timetable with many small trains and various locos ad formations, but at 12” to the foot. Layouts that have currently been confirmed are as followed: Bron Hebog – 009 - It could be argued that if it wasn’t for the remarkable achievement of building the Deviation and the chutzpah it engendered in the FR organisation as a result, the Welsh Highland Railway would never have been rebuilt in full in the manner it has been today. Whilst the spiral is one of the civil engineering icons of the FR so the serpentine nature of the WHR above Beddgelert is one of the most distinctive aspects of the railway. Therefore, it was only natural that they decided on a follow up layout to Dduallt. The size of the layout allows them to run true length WHR trains and show the full extent of the S bend around Cwm Cloch as well as another favourite Welsh Highland feature, one of the bare-rock tunnels. Like Dduallt, most of the locomotives have been built up and adapted from kits while the majority of the rolling stock has been built from scratch. Crosby – 4mm/12mm Gauge – The Isle of Man Railway is a 3ft gauge system with Crosby standing as a passing station on the Douglas to Peel line that closed in 1968. All stock on the layout is kit built from Branchlines with a few Roxey coach kits, while the buildings are built from scratch using card and slate plasticard. Tan y Bwlch – 009 – Tan y Bwlch is modelled on the Ffestiniog Railway station of the same name, during any high season between the early 1990’s to today. Due to space limitations, a modeller’s license has been used for this layout. This layout has been designed to allow current operating practice, and provide an overall feel of the Ffestiniog Railway. This event is a must-see for all railway and transport enthusiasts, anyone who enjoys seeing old attractions and memories brought back in smaller form or if you simply like visiting great attractions with the family. With fantastic holiday parks in Snowdonia available to book during your visit, you’re sure to have a great weekend break.
